Description

Jug. Silver. Madrid, 1790. With contrast marks.
Silver jug in its color that features an oval base with staggering based on smooth moldings; smooth tearshaped body, with a somewhat pronounced beak and enhanced with engraved lines; hinged lid and decorated with line and plant element to lift this part; The handle, in the form of "ce" with a scroll in the lower area or "uneven" that, has a series of lines and an element in the upper part with Rococo memory. Contrast marks are found on the lid and three on the base. Those of Villa and Corte de Madrid place the realization of the piece in the capital and in the year 1790 or 1791. A mancerina is known in private collection with this same variation in the years of the date (cut with 91 and villa with the 90). Stylistically, the jar shows a clear neoclassical influence along with that mentioned detail found in Madrid pieces closer to the Rococo. In 18th-century Spain, it was the capital that marked the pattern in silverware: the baroque, rococo and neoclassical styles coexist, but the first trend is soon abandoned, replaced by the second one that is introduced around 1740, with the Neoclassicism appearing approximately in 1770 and gradually imposed since 1780.
