You are bidding on a used vintage 1904 United States Military leather case. It has the "US" logo embossed into the leather on the front. It is marked with embossed lettering on the side "Rock Island Arsenal 1904, T.C." A little history: this is an excellent condition McKeever (third patter) leather box. It was made by Rock Island Arsenal in 1904 and is so marked. This was the standard method for carrying cartridges for most of the Trapdoor Springfield era. These cases hold 20 rounds in two 10-row canvas loops. The third pattern used woven loops to reduce the contact of the cartridges with the leather which caused verdigris (green crud) to form. The bulge in the leather on one end is to accompany a rifle tool kit on the inside. As I understand it, only the early 1876 tool actually fits! This case was used during the transition period between the .30-40 Krag-Jorgensen rifles and the .30-03/.30-06 Springfield, he used a sharp object to scratch his initials in the leather case next to the Rock Island stamp. . The case measures 5 1/2" wide x 4 1/4" tall x 1 1/2" deep. It has two leather straps on the back for belt loops, and secures with a leather strap that slides over a brass nob. On the back is 4M 21and a emblem (see pictures).
